Choosing Voluntary Assisted Dying is a deeply personal decision, one that reflects courage, clarity, and care for those you leave behind. We respect and honour that choice by helping you shape what comes next, a farewell that reflects your values, traditions and comforts your loved ones. This help brings closure with grace.
If VAD is being considered, has been approved, or has already taken place, we’re here to help with the funeral planning side of this journey, gently, and entirely at your own pace.
Voluntary Assisted Dying has been a legal end-of-life choice for eligible adults in Western Australia since July 2021. It allows a person diagnosed with an advanced, progressive illness expected to cause death within six months (or twelve months for a neuro degenerative condition) to request medical assistance to end their life, if their suffering cannot be relieved in a way they find tolerable.
The eligibility criteria are strict and specific, and the request must come from the person themselves. We’re not the right people to guide you through the legal or medical process itself, your doctor, or the WA Department of Health, are the right first point of contact for that.
For accurate, official information on eligibility and the VAD process, visit the WA Department of Health’s Voluntary Assisted Dying page.
What we can help with is everything that comes after that decision with planning a funeral and farewell that reflects the person’s wishes, at a pace feels right for you and your family.
Voluntary Assisted Dying often gives a family something they don’t expect, weeks or months of advance notice. That time can be used to have conversations that are usually rushed or missed entirely, about what someone truly wants their farewell to look like.
Our End-of-Life Funeral Planning service exists for exactly this kind of conversation, whether or not VAD is part of the picture. It lets someone make these decisions themselves, while they’re here to make them, rather than leaving their family to guess later.
Booking our End-of-Life Plan lets you make these decisions yourself, while you’re here to make them, rather than leaving your family to guess later.
Once VAD has been approved, some people choose to plan every detail of the funeral in advance. Some want to keep it personal, others want their family around to help decide, and some prefer to wait and simply know that support is there when the time comes.
There’s no right way to approach this, only what feels manageable for you.
Whether you plan now or later, there are still legal and practical details that need to be managed properly, which is exactly what we’re here for.
If it would help to think through those wishes in more depth, our End-of-Life Funeral Planning service exists for exactly that.
If you or a loved one are navigating Voluntary Assisted Dying, or death is close, please reach out. Closing Circles specialises in cremations, burials, and End-of-Life funeral planning, alongside memorials and living wakes across Perth and country WA.
Every farewell is shaped around the person it’s for, and every option comes with the reasoning behind it, so you understand what each choice actually means before you make it.
