Mushroom Coffins in Western Australia

A farewell that gives back to the earth.

Loop Biotech grows soft mushroom coffins and urns from mycelium, the living root network of mushrooms, and hemp fiber. Closing Circles is a founding Western Australian partner of Arrow Bronze and Loop Biotech, and we are proud to offer this environmentally friendly and gentle choice to families across Western Australia.

A Farewell that Nourishes Life

The Living Cocoon is actually grown from mushrooms in just seven days, something we never imagined we’d be saying about a coffin!

For us, it’s about giving families more choice and offering a beautiful, natural way to say goodbye.

We’re very proud to be part of the Loop journey and can’t wait to share more with you.

How a mushroom coffin is made

Grown, not made.

From nature, Back to nature.

The Loop Living Cocoon™ is grown using mycelium , the underground root network of mushrooms and upcycled plant fibres.

Protected by Australia’s high standards
Australia protects its natural environment with some of the highest biosecurity standards in the world, and Loop products meet them. Each product is heat treated, a chemical-free method that keeps it natural and cares for the earth it returns to.

More than a product, a complete farewell

Closing Circles is a funeral home, so we look after every part of the farewell, not only the coffin or urn. A Loop product can be part of a burial, a cremation, a living wake or a memorial. You can choose it during an end-of-life planning session or at the time of need.

Steps:

  1. Talk with us. Tell us what matters to your family. We listen, explain the options and answer every question.
  2. We take care of the details. We confirm arrangements with your chosen cemetery or crematorium in advance, so your family can feel at ease.
  3. We arrange everything. Product, care of your loved one, ceremony and paperwork, all looked after by one caring team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mushroom coffin?

It is a Cocoon (coffin) grown from mycelium, the root network of mushrooms, together with hemp fibre. It is used in the same way as a conventional coffin.

Does the coffin leak?

The Living Cocoon is made from a hydrophobic material, which means it repels water. Loop states it is suitable for use in refrigeration units and for funerals held in the rain.

How long does it take to break down?

The coffin returns to the earth within 45 days in ideal conditions once it is in the soil. The time for your loved one varies with the soil and conditions.

Can it be used for cremation?

Loop states the Living Cocoon is certified for cremation and has been cremated around the world. We are in the process of the mushroom cocoon being approved with the Perth Metropolitan Cemeteries Board for cremation.

Is it strong enough?

It supports up to 200 kg. Loop designed it to be handled like a conventional coffin.

What happens before burial?

It remains intact while it is kept dry and above ground. It only begins to break down in contact with soil.

Can I keep an Earthrise urn at home?

Yes. When the EarthRise Urn stays dry it stays intact and only breaks down in soil when wet.

Can I bury ashes in my garden or a cemetery?

Rules vary by location and cemetery. We can advise you on the requirements before you decide.

Where are the handles?

The Living Cocoon has six integrated jute handles built into the coffin, suitable for six people to carry. At the graveside it can be lowered with a mechanical lift or with ropes.
